Frictionless seals
19 October 2015
Auto supplier Freudenberg Sealing Technologies has won its first major order for a new generation of seals. The frictionless seals, a subject of the company’s research for years, will go into production in 2017. The new 'Levitex' mechanical face seals function with a cushion of air, reducing both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

With "Levitex,” Freudenberg Sealing Technologies has developed a new generation of mechanical seal that hardly produces any friction at all. The resulting CO2 reductions – as high as 1 gram per kilometer driven – are significant. If every car in Germany were equipped with the Levitex technology, more than 440,000t of carbon dioxide would be saved each year. In mathematical terms, this would correspond to a 146-million-litre reduction in fuel consumption.
"At present, no other technology is known that allows the frictionless and secure sealing of the crankshaft,” said Dr. Eberhard Bock, the head of strategic product development at Freudenberg Sealing Technologies.
