Backlash-free & reliable
15 January 2018
While many couplings appear comparable at first glance the devil is in the detail and a poor design can lead to machine damage. So what characterises a good product?
Quality products such as the servo couplings from mayr power transmission are backlash-free, not just when new, but over the entire service lifetime. This protects them from wear and premature failure, above all at high speeds. mayr ensures the individual parts are manufactured with high levels of precision and narrow axial run-out and shaft run-out tolerances, and that the couplings feature a high balance quality, as they must function accurately and reliably even under extreme conditions.
The company has recently extended its standard modular system with several new hub designs and intermediate sleeves, and provides solutions for all drive constellations. The intelligent modular system also ensures high availability and short delivery times for standard components.
For the flexible ROBA-ES claw coupling this has resulted in proven quality in a new design and additional hub variants, for example split-shell hubs, or camlock stud hubs for hollow shafts. The ROBA-ES couplings are always used in servo axes when critical vibrations occur and when torsionally rigid shaft couplings reach their limits. They transmit the torque backlash-free and compensate for shaft misalignments. The damping compensation element protects the drive system against critical vibrations. However, the couplings are torsionally rigid so that even with highly-dynamic servo drives, accuracy is not compromised.
With the smartflex steel bellows coupling, mayr provides a patented shaft coupling designed with a multi-layered steel bellows. This gives the coupling a high torsional rigidity, which in turn ensures high positioning and run-out accuracy and an absolute backlash-free and therefore error-free torque transmission between the two shafts.
The multi-layered bellows design features a far higher misalignment compensation capability in comparison to single-layer bellows. Higher misalignment compensation capability also means higher reliability, operating safety and lifetime.
Depending on the requirements, glued, welding or clamping solutions are available for the connection between hub and steel bellows. However, in practice the clamping connection has established itself today as the smart and permanently backlash-free solution, as welding, for example, can cause thermal stress at the point of connection, which can lead to bellows breakage in case of shaft misalignment when in operation. In comparison to clamping or welding, glue connections react sensitively to high temperatures and under certain circumstances also to cleaning agents or other aggressive media.
The clamping connection, however, is not only the most gentle and good-natured variant, it also permits the smartflex couplings to be assembled very easily and flexibly according to the modular principle, and easily adapted to the changed shaft diameter or to different shaft distances. In this way, for example, variable intermediate sleeves which are clamped between two short smartflex designs can easily and quickly bridge larger shaft distances.
Compact package
Disk pack couplings such as the ROBA-DS have the highest torsional rigidity compared with steel bellows and elastomer couplings. They are robust and resistant to different temperatures and are wear-resistant and maintenance-free, which is why they are especially suitable for use in extreme ambient conditions. A wide-ranging standard modular system with intermediate sleeves and a multitude of available hub designs ensures, in addition to high flexibility, adaptability in numerous drive constellations.
The couplings with their appropriately-selected hubs can be easily and quickly installed and deinstalled, even in difficult ambient conditions. The nominal torques stated in the catalogue can be used for all ROBA-DS disk pack couplings without any restrictions. The stated shaft misalignments can be utilised to the sum of 100% without influencing the transmittable torque.
