Inverter series for lift applications

10 May 2024

IN A new development in elevator technology, motor and drive supplier WEG has introduced the ADL500 inverter series.

The ADL500 series, certified to European standards EN81-20 and EN81-50, combines the success of its predecessor, the ADL300, with innovative concepts that shape the future of elevator technology. This new offering boasts a host of pioneering features, including Safe Torque Off SIL3, Safe Brake Test (SBT), and the Safe Brake Control (SBC – SIL3) with EBC500 accessory, which allow to control and monitor motor brakes status and avoid any unintentional movement.

This integrated and innovative approach to safety features has allowed WEG to introduce a new concept called “Zero contactors”.

In terms of comfort, ADL500 offers the new enhanced Elevator Position Control (EPC) algorithm ensuring optimal comfort into the cabin, direct approach, and precise floor levelling even in the most demanding environments.

The new series offers an array of energy-saving solutions, aligning with the global shift towards sustainable practices. “Green” approach can be achieved with different solutions: by regeneration, where WEG introduced a new size of Active Front End Power Supply unit AFE200 for small elevators and a parameter to inform user about system regeneration capabilities; by saving energy with stand-by function, where the power part of the drive is shut off in order to eliminate the energy consumption during the idle state, and with energy peak shaving where external supercapacitors pack can be recharged during the braking energy regeneration.

Recognising the prevalence of smart devices and IoT technology, WEG's ADL500 series facilitates seamless operator communication with the inverter. The dedicated WEG Liftouch free application for Android, IOS, and Windows platforms allows operations like the start-up, monitoring, tuning, alarm check and the communication with the inverter is possible both via Wi-Fi connection, if the operator is located on site, or via WEG Drives RMS (Remote Management System) portal wherever he is located. A full set of log-in profiles can limit the level of operation to each operator based on his skills.

Comprising three models — the ADL550, ADL530, and ADL510 — each tailored to suit high-rise, medium-rise, low-rise, or modernisation projects.

“The ADL550 is equipped with a comprehensive safety package and enhanced EPC,” explained Karim Boudaoud, product manager at WEG Automation Europe. “This model is ideal for high-rise buildings, while the ADL530 accommodates both asynchronous and synchronous motors, featuring an integrated universal multi-encoder interface, with a range of encoders (EnDat, SinCos, BiSS, SSI and Digital Incremental) already integrated into the inverter. This innovative design eliminates the need for additional cards, streamlining stock management and setup.”

The ADL510 is designed for asynchronous motors typical of low-rise buildings or modernisation projects and offers a straightforward installation process.

With a power range of between 4 and 15kW and an extension to 45 kW within the end of the year with different power supply voltages, it cates to a wide range of applications.

The ADL500 inverter family embraces a smart approach and sustainable practice to offer innovative new solutions in elevator technology. With pioneering new concepts putting safety, simplicity, comfort and efficiency at the forefront, this new offering is an exciting new development in the elevator market.
