Bringing enhanced flexibility to industrial communication

WERMA has redefined the classic signal tower with the eSIGN series: LED technology, freely programmable colors and light effects, full-surface signaling, and an elegant, modern industrial design that won the iF design award 2025. With the new PROFINET version, development continues towards a fully networked, real-time communicating signalling solution for Industry 4.0.

"With PROFINET, we are enabling our customers to integrate eSIGN even more easily and deeply into existing automation networks," explains Daniel Kensy, head of development at WERMA Signaltechnik. "This creates the basis for greater flexibility, easier handling, and maximum transparency in production."

Real-time communication 

The eSIGN PROFINET enables real-time communication between the signal device and the control system. Machine statuses can thus be displayed and evaluated without delay, a particular advantage in automated and safety-relevant applications.

Another highlight is that the device is powered via Power over Ethernet (PoE), meaning that data and energy are transmitted via a single cable. This significantly reduces installation costs and material costs and ensures a tidy, efficient system layout. The eSIGN PROFINET supports both PoE and PoE+ and is connected via a 4-pin M12 socket, which is robust, industry-standard, and future-proof.

Easy commissioning

The new eSIGN ihas been designed for ease of commissioning: simply connect the device and it is automatically recognised by the network. It can then be integrated directly into the existing network topology.

In addition, the PROFINET version offers extended diagnostic options; errors in communication between the product and the control system are detected more quickly and localised more precisely. This allows the causes of errors to be traced immediately, which noticeably simplifies maintenance and service and increases system availability.

Enhanced flexibility

Compared to the IO-Link version, the new PROFINET variant offers even greater flexibility. Users can switch between all modes and colors and control each segment individually, making the technology ideal for dynamic processes in which statuses, warnings, or process progress must be visualised precisely.

This makes the eSIGN PROFINET not just a signal source, but an intelligent communication module that integrates seamlessly into any industrial environment.

PROFINET or IO-Link 

With the introduction of the PROFINET version, WERMA now offers its customers two powerful communication variants within the same product family. While the previous IO-Link version is ideal for machine builders and applications with decentralized control architecture, the PROFINET version offers additional possibilities for use in large, networked production facilities and smart factory environments – including real-time communication, diagnostic functions, and PoE supply.
