Digitalisation cemented with WeAssist

The company implemented WERMA’s WeASSIST system to address a fundamental challenge within its manufacturing operation: a lack of reliable production data. Although processes were being completed, the limited availability of data made it difficult to measure performance, identify recurring problems or systematically optimise production.

The new system combines visual signal towers with a cloud-based platform to provide real-time information on machine and production status. Data is collected centrally and used to establish clear key performance indicators (KPIs), giving Skanska greater visibility of manufacturing performance and providing a stronger basis for data-driven decision-making.

The technology is also being used to improve communication on the factory floor. Colour-coded signal columns provide an immediate visual indication of operating conditions, while WeASSIST enables employees to issue calls for assistance when intervention is required. This provides a structured escalation process, helping the appropriate personnel respond more quickly to faults, disruptions and other production issues.

The project also had a significant human element. Skanska initially faced scepticism among employees around the introduction of digital monitoring and increased transparency. Rather than treating the system purely as a data collection tool, the implementation focused on demonstrating its practical value to employees and integrating it into everyday production activities.

This has contributed to greater acceptance of the technology and a shift towards more data-driven collaboration. Employees can now access clearer information about production status, while support teams have greater visibility of where assistance is required.

According to Skanska, the resulting improvements include greater transparency across manufacturing operations, faster responses to faults and disruptions, and more consistent communication between production and support teams. The availability of structured production data has also enabled the company to establish clearer KPIs and introduce more systematic approaches to process analysis and improvement.

Implementation required close cooperation between Skanska and WERMA, particularly in addressing IT and security requirements associated with the cloud-based system. The project demonstrates the importance of integrating digital manufacturing technologies with existing operational processes rather than implementing them as standalone systems.

The initiative has subsequently been recognised within the wider Skanska Group, receiving an award for digital productivity.
