Required for use in dusty salt-laden conditions, the motor has to operate at high altitude over a wide ambient temperature range, with low EMC emissions. To meet these requirements, a high efficiency design was essential, with low losses and a low input current. The design incorporates rare-earth permanent magnets, low-loss lamination steel and novel designs in the windings and construction.
 
Operating at 2100rpm continuous duty, the 5kW DC motor achieves an output torque of 22.5Nm. For short periods the motor can provide an output power of 8kW at 92% efficiency. An internally fitted encoder provides position or speed monitoring.
