Culture is king for manufacturing productivity

22 June 2026

GREATER VISIBILITY into factory operations can boost productivity and employee engagement by supporting workers' key psychological needs, a new FourJaw Manufacturing Analytics report reveals. However, many manufacturers are unable to realise the benefits of data-driven operations due to organisational cultures that still view new technologies as a threat.

FourJaw’s Empowering Today’s Manufacturing Workforce report details how objective production data can improve factory workers’ morale and performance by empowering them with greater autonomy and fostering a stronger sense of certainty and fairness.

Independent analysis in the report shows organisations with highly engaged manufacturing workforces are 14% to 18% more productive and 23% more profitable than those with low employee engagement. These workforces also saw 32% fewer quality defects and 63% fewer safety-related incidents.

These gains add to the benefits manufacturers get from using data in continuous improvement initiatives. According to FourJaw, SME manufacturers typically achieve a median 30% increase in productivity by using data to identify and address their biggest inefficiencies. Larger manufacturers typically see a 16% increase in production output through similar data-driven approaches.

FourJaw estimates that up to a third of factories struggle to realise the benefits of data-driven operations due to fear of change. Common issues that limit progress include an unwillingness to share information across departments, perceived disruption from new systems, and a fear that data will be used for disciplinary purposes rather than as a resource for factory optimisation.

Chris Iveson, CEO at FourJaw Manufacturing Analytics, said: “While manufacturers rightly focus on machine efficiency, the next productivity frontier involves empowering the people who operate and manage machines. Real-time insight is the key to bridging the gap between management objectives and shop-floor reality, and driving sustained improvements in output and employee morale.”

“Replacing gut feel with objective data delivers the insight needed to combat high energy costs, inflation and skills shortages, but some manufacturers struggle to achieve these benefits because their people are afraid to see and share what’s really happening on the shop floor. Culture is king for manufacturing productivity. The shift to a data-driven factory requires good communication, an openness to change, and a keen focus on creating cultures of ongoing transparency and mutual success.”
