Cable entry as a modular hybrid system

10 June 2019

Introducing a circular connector into the housing of a cabinet often requires an additional hole. Cable management specialist icotek shows that this is easily possible without additional breakouts in the housing

The networking and cabling of control devices of various kinds with increasingly complex mechanical and electrical applications is growing. Therefore, increasing demands have to be met.

With the patented splittable KEL systems from icotek for cable entry (available for standard breakouts in sizes 10, 16, 24), pre-assembled cables with plugs and without in control cabinets, terminal boxes as well as machines and systems are introduced, sealed and at the same time strain-relieved. Components are secured and protected against dust, dirt and water and shielded against EMC interference.

Any cable can be led through a suitable cable entry frame in a variety of ways. However, despite this flexibility, so far it has not been possible to introduce interfaces for hybrid connectors in the cable entry frame. Up until now, additional holes in the housing have been required along with further cable entry frames. These additional holes are now a thing of the past.

Previously a grommet had been missing, which also serves as an interface for hybrid connectors – a grommet with flexibility, a high degree of individual usability, high-quality materials and a correspondingly practical IP degree of protection; an internal threaded grommet that fully integrates into the icotek cable entry frames.
The starting point was clear: the integration of the panel sockets, pressure compensation elements, hybrid connectors, hose fittings, circular connectors or built-in couplings into  splittable cable entry frames had to be allowed.  The flexibility and reliability of the individual components had to be maintained.

Modular hybrid system in a frame

The advantages of such a solution for the user are obvious: additional perforations in the housing wall are no longer required and make several work steps unnecessary. The user does not need any further cable entry frames. Following requests from customers icotek has developed a ready-for-production solution for the integration of these interfaces.

From the cable entry system to the modular hybrid system in 5 steps:

  • When fitting the cable entry frame, the user inserts the KT-M, with the appropriate thread, into the frame of the cable entry.
  • The cable entry frame is now being closed by screwing.
  • Then the frame is screwed onto the housing.
  • The corresponding counterpart (e.g. plug connector) must be integrated into the thread of the KT-M.
  • Finally, attach the plug to the counterpart.

Through the use of the new KT-M grommet, recessed plugs, panel sockets are integrated directly into the cable entry frames KEL, KEL-U or KEL-ER. The KT-M is available with the female threads M12x1,0, M16x1,5, M20x1,5 and M25x1,5.

Alternatively, a KT-M is available as a blind insert. The integrated polyamide body is completely closed on one side. The effective area is 24x24mm, the wall thickness 6mm. Here, special bores can be made or even smaller flange bushings (for example for hybrid device connectors) can be attached. Considering the useful area, many individual variants can be realised. There are no limits to the user’s needs- only the usable area of 24x24mm though. The protection class is IP65.

The KT-M creates interfaces for signal, data, power and hybrid connectors

The KT-M creates interfaces for signal, data, power and hybrid connectors which are simply screwed into the thread of the KT-M depending on the requirements. The KT-M can also be used to screw in pressure equalisation elements and hose fittings up to M25x1.5.

What exactly can be mounted on the KT-M?

  • Receptacle connector e.g. for the device connections
  • Hose fittings for sizes M16 / 20/25; made of polyamide, polypropylene, brass, stainless steel etc.
  • Built-in connector for front mounting
  • Built-in couplings M12x1.0, M16x1.5, M20x1.5, M25x1.5
  • Panel sockets M12x1.0, M16x1.5, M20x1.5, M25x1.5
  • Pressure equalization elements M12x1,0, M16, M20, M25
  • Hybrid connectors are used for signal, data and power transmission. The wiring effort is reduced with hybrid connectors.

The integration of interfaces for signal, data or hybrid cables into splittable cable entries is now possible with icotek's new KT-M grommet generation. The temperature resistance ranges from -40 to + 90 ° C. The fire class is UL94-VO. The size of each KT-M is 42 x 41.5 x 19mm. Like almost all icotek products, the KT-M is halogen and silicone free. Samples can be obtained directly from the manufacturer at www.icotek.co.uk.
