RS partners with Land Rover in schools technology challenge
14 March 2016
RS Components (RS) has partnered with the UK Land Rover 4x4 in Schools Technology Challenge, becoming an Official Technical Supporter for the educational initiative for 11-19 year-olds.
RS is supporting the UK Land Rover 4x4 in Schools Technology Challenge with the supply of 200 Raspberry Pi 2 starter kits for all the schools competing in this year’s competition. The kit enables competing students to incorporate computer-based controls into the designs of their Land Rover 4x4 in Schools vehicle.
Mark Wemyss-Holden, UK Project Manager, Land Rover 4x4 in Schools says of the announcement, “It’s great to have RS on board with us and we welcome the support that they are giving us for this year’s Regional Finals and the National Final. There are clear links between the products that RS offers and our challenge, so it is a very appropriate partnership. We reach out to students and schools engaging with the Land Rover 4x4 in Schools Technology Challenge across the UK and this exposure for RS will, I am sure, generate positive awareness. For us, the starter kits that RS is providing are a great bonus for the teams competing in the challenge and are a great way for us to promote the opportunities which the challenge presents to students.”
Students participating in the UK Land Rover 4x4 in Schools Technology Challenge design and build remote controlled four-wheel drive vehicles. The teams present their work at the Regional Finals to an expert panel that scrutinise the cars against a comprehensive set of rules and regulations. The most nerve-wracking element of the competition comes when they drive their bespoke designed vehicle on a model off-road track, with a variety of surfaces and obstacles for the vehicle to tackle, testing breadth of capability expected of Land Rover 4x4 in Schools vehicles.
Tracey Taylor, Community Manager at RS, said: “We are delighted to support this exciting initiative that helps promote engineering in an engaging way. RS believes in putting innovation in the hands of present and future engineers, so we are glad to be able to offer our support to these young engineers of tomorrow.”
Les Ratcliffe, Head of Community Relations, Jaguar Land Rover, commented, "As lead sponsor for the Land Rover 4x4 in Schools Technology Challenge, we're delighted that RS Components is joining as official technical supporter. The Raspberry Pi 2 starter kit encourages innovation and creativity, which is what the Challenge is all about, and will help the students develop 4x4 miniature vehicles which can truly go above and beyond."
The 2016 season of the UK Land Rover 4x4 in Schools Technology Challenge kicked off this month in the Central Region with a further five Regional Finals taking place throughout the UK in the next two months, before the UK National Final is held at the end of April at Silverstone race circuit’s Wing Building.
