Siemens Industry has launched its next generation controller family for medium to high-end machine and plant automation to coincide with the latest versionof its Totally Integrated Automation (TIA) Portal engineering framework

At the recent UK launch of the new Siemens S7-1500 PLC generation, business manager for automation Simon Keogh was emphatic in his assertions that in order to compete globally, the UK industry needs to continually optimise and that the best way to active this is to automate!

Designed for medium to high- end machine and plant automation, the Simatic S7-1500 is geared toward performance and efficiency. Features include what Siemens says is outstanding system performance and a host of functions integrated as standard, including motion control, maximum security and safety applications that are easy to implement.

The controllers are designed to drive greater efficiencies including innovative design for simple commissioning and safe operation, configurable diagnostic functions for plant status and integration into the Siemens Totally Integrated Automation (TIA) Portal for simple engineering and low project costs.

To support users in safeguarding their applications, Simatic S7-1500 features what is referred to as a Security Integrated, which extends from block protection to communication integrity. Integrated functions help safeguard the user's intellectual property or know-how, and protect against unauthorised access and modification. For copy protection the Simatic memory card is used, on which individual blocks are linked to the serial numbers of the original memory card. This should ensure that programs only run with the configured memory card and cannot be copied. Access protection addresses the problem of protecting the application against unauthorised configuration changes and different user groups can be assigned separate rights by means of authorisation stages. Special mechanisms are geared toward recognising modified engineering data – in order, for example, to protect the data transmitted to the controller from unauthorised manipulation.

The Simatic S7-1500 range is being launched in stages. Initially, the portfolio will comprise three CPU types 1511, 1513 and 1516 for the medium performance range. Each is also available as a F- version (failsafe) for safety applications, with graded performance features. These differ in the number of interfaces, bit performance and the size of the display and data memory. According to the individual automation task, the CPUs in the central configuration can be supplemented with as many as 32 expansion modules, for example with the new communication and technology modules or IO modules, in the same format as Simatic ET 200MP from Siemens.

Siemens Industry has also extended its Totally Integrated Automation (TIA) Portal engineering framework with a number of new functions, adding power and efficiency to the existing framework’s capabilities. 

Version 12 enables all drives of the Sinamics G converter series from Siemens to be integrated into the TIA Portal. In addition, further diagnostic functions have been integrated including extended safety functionalities for Siemens Simatic S7-1500 and the Profinet communication performance.

The programming languages provide even greater efficiency and new security functions give improved protection and enhanced security against third party manipulation such as replay attacks, as well as superior copy and access solutions. Within the framework of the new version of the TIA Portal there are also updates for engineering tools for the configuration, programming, commissioning and servicing of the Siemens automation devices and drive systems. These include engineering systems: Simatic Step 7 V12 for Simatic controllers, Simatic WinCC V12 for HMI systems (Simatic HMI) and Sinamics Startdrive V12 for the Sinamics G converter family.
