Automated flexible production
26 June 2023
PRODUCTION COSTS have been steadily increasing while the demand for lower manufacturing prices persists, posing challenges for many manufacturers. WTO, a precision toolholder manufacturer, sought to address these issues along with the scarcity of skilled workers by establishing a fully automated production hall.

Collaboration with workholding technology manufacturer, Hainbuch, allowed WTO to overcome the complexities associated with frequent clamping device changes through a series of coordinated measurements and tests. The result is WTO's new Smart Factory, where all processes are automated, including component insertion, clamping device changes, and driverless transport systems.
Since late 2022, autonomous production of a driven tool component has been operating 24/7 in batch sizes ranging from 1 to 100, marking a significant achievement after three years of development. The Smart Factory not only ensures WTO's competitiveness and long-term viability but also facilitates the attraction of highly qualified personnel.
Additionally, the facility prioritises sustainability by utilising renewable energy sources and employing waste heat recovery, resulting in a yearly reduction of nearly 1000 tons of CO2 emissions.
