Ultra-compact IoT solution for edge & automation
06 July 2020
With the new EN01 series, Mini PC pioneer Shuttle is entering the field of Edge Computing. Aimed at applications in the industrial sector, the robust new product range offers flexible connection and expansion possibilities, DIN rail mounting and tiny dimensions.
Initially, two palm-sized complete PCs will be available with various hardware features:
- Robust aluminium chassis with a length of just 92mm
- Passive cooling for constant operation with low maintenance
- Can be expanded to include PoE and 4G, for example
The Shuttle product family, known as 'Edge', will initially consist of two instantly bootable models featuring energy-efficient processors from the Intel 'Apollo Lake' series and supporting Windows 10 and Linux operating systems.
- EN01J3: Intel Celeron J3355 (2.0-2.5 GHz, Dual Core), 4 GB RAM, 64 GB eMMC flash memory
- EN01J4: Intel Pentium J4205 (1.5-2.6 GHz, Quad Core), 8 GB RAM, 64 GB eMMC flash memory
Both devices are accommodated in a robust aluminium chassis with passive cooling. They measure just 92.4 x 54.4 x 90mm (LWH) and are designed for reliable constant operation at an ambient temperature of up to 50˚C.
For expansion purposes, an M.2-3042 B-key slot for 4G modems, WLAN, SSDs or capture cards is available inside. A multi-pin header provides access to COM, GPIO, I²C, power/reset functions. Additional features include USB 3.2 Gen 1 type A, HDMI 1.4b, Micro USB 2.0, Gigabit network and a Micro SD card reader. Thanks to an internal slot for nano SIM cards, there is nothing to prevent mobile data transmission.
"A variety of connection possibilities and expansions, combined with a robust miniature chassis, make the EN01 series ideal for demanding IoT and edge projects,” explains Tom Seiffert, Head of Marketing & PR at Shuttle Computer. "But professional applications such as machine control, automation, gateway, imaging and digital signage are also conceivable."
A bracket which is also supplied for the DIN rail allows quick and secure mounting in switch cabinets and cases. Alternatively, the EN01 models can also be attached to suitable monitors and surfaces using the VESA mount which is likewise supplied with the product.
Both models have a two-pin Euroblock connector and can be supplied with a voltage of 12-19 Volt. A Phoenix screw terminal and an adapter for power supply units with a barrel connector is included.
Several expansion modules are also available as accessories. The PD01 accessory, for example, adds a second Gigabit network connection with Power over Ethernet (PoE) which can be used to supply the Edge machines with power via a network cable. Another accessory is the PSE01 module, which can again supply PoE machines, for example a network camera which is connected directly. Shuttle supplies two LTE/4G antennas (WWN01) for mobile reception. Alternatively, WLAN can be added with the accessory WLN-M & LN007. To process images from HDMI signal sources, a capture card in M.2 format is available (MCAP01*). As the PCs presented here do not include a power supply unit, you can make use of the PE90 accessory if necessary.
The recommended retail price (ex VAT) from Shuttle for the EN01J3 is 377.00 Euro, and the EN01J4 costs 467.00 Euro. Both models listed here are available from specialist retailers Europe-wide right now.
