Up to four modules in a single unit

24 June 2014

Motion Control Products is the exclusive UK distributor of the Schneider Electric Lexium 32i modular servo drive which allows the configuration of numerous individual drive versions with just a few components.

An online configurator is used to select a combination of up to four modules: motor, drive control, power supply and I/O fieldbus connector. With servo motor and servo drive integrated in one housing, the Lexium 32i is designed for application areas requiring high precision and advanced motor control, such as materials handling, materials processing, packaging and printing.

The Lexium 32i is designed for application areas requiring high precision and advanced motor control

The Lexium 32i integrated stand-alone servo drive for machine and plant engineering combines the Lexium 32 servo controller and the Lexium BMH servo motor into a single unit. The result is a drive which combines the advantages of an integrated servo drive with an unprecedented degree of flexibility in customising drives to meet the needs of many disparate production environments for a power range up to 2.2kW.

The servo controller is installed directly in the machine (as opposed to in a control cabinet), reducing the installation effort and eliminating shielded motor cables. The benefits are increased flexibility, simplified engineering, less wiring and reduced energy costs. The wiring and connector concept allows connection cables to be mounted to the top or the rear of the drive; this means that the drive can be adapted to the design requirements of the machine, as opposed to requiring the system to adapt to the drive. The servo motor and the drive are connected together in a single unit, eliminating the need for power and encoder cables.

Reduced energy costs

Energy costs may be reduced by up to 30%: because the servo drive is installed directly in the machine, it reduces the energy required to air-condition the control cabinet. The Lexium 32i features passive cooling and does not need a fan. The housing radiates the heat generated by the drive so that the outside air is sufficient for cooling at normal ambient temperatures.

The Lexium 32i is available with 70 and 100mm motor flanges. The drive is supplied with either 110 to 230V AC single-phase or 208 to 480V AC three-phase. Versions are provided for fieldbus and input/output connections, industrial connectors or screw terminals. With CANopen or EtherCAT, two standard communication protocols are available for communication between the drive and the master controller and CANmotion or EtherCAT can be used as communication protocols for synchronous applications.

The four modular components are easy to assemble by simply clicking on each component to secure. The devices feature a holder for a memory card. Drive settings may be stored and recalled by inserting the card. The parameters stored on the memory card can also be transferred to other devices. If a device is replaced, a new device of the same type can be operated with identical parameters. The contents of the memory card are compared to the parameters stored in the device when the device is switched on. When the parameters are written to the EEPROM, they are also saved to the memory card. Only genuine accessory memory cards should be used; although the memory card can remain in the device, there is a limit to the number of insert/remove cycles it can withstand.
