Reduced Wiring
02 November 2012
Connectivity lies at the heart of automation, especially as increasing numbers of sensors with integrated M12 plugs are chosen, and the new Y-cables from ifm electronic aim to make connection of these sensors easier and more flexible.

Two styles are on offer: the EVC range of oil-proof connectors, essentially general- purpose connectors; and EVT water-resistant connectors aimed at the food industry. The advantage of a Y-splitter is the ability to utilise redundant ports in distribution boxes, reducing the overall wiring cost. This is achieved because the industry- standard (EN 61076-2) M12 connector invariably has at least four possible connections, but most sensors only need three – by commoning the power, the fourth pole can be used for a second sensor using the Y-splitter.
